Open your Android phone, go to Settings, and look up what Google Play Services has access to. Location – continuous, in the background. Contacts – full read access. Calendar – full read and write. App usage history. Installed applications. Device identifiers that persist across factory resets.

None of this is hidden. Google publishes it. You agreed to it when you set up the phone. The question is whether, having seen it clearly, you want to continue the arrangement.

Two practical alternatives exist in 2026. Neither requires a technical background to use. Both require a willingness to accept some friction, particularly in the first few weeks. This piece explains what each offers, what it costs in practical terms, and who each is for.

What de-Googled means in practice

A de-Googled Android phone runs Android without Google Mobile Services (GMS) – the package of background services that includes Google Play Services, the Play Store, and the associated APIs. Without GMS, Google has no persistent background access to your device. The trade-off is that apps which depend on GMS will not work without workarounds.

The main things you lose: seamless push notifications for some apps, Google Maps running in the background, the Play Store as a default app source. Most of these are recoverable. Push notifications work through microG, a lightweight GMS replacement. Alternative app stores – F-Droid for open-source software, Aurora Store as a Play Store proxy – cover most everyday applications.

The category of loss that is not easily recoverable: some banking apps use Google’s Play Integrity API to verify that the device has not been modified. On a de-Googled device, these checks fail and the app refuses to run. This is the most common practical blocker for new users. GrapheneOS has a specific solution to it; /e/OS does not.

Path 1: Pixel 8 with GrapheneOS

GrapheneOS is the technically rigorous option. It is a hardened fork of AOSP (Android Open Source Project) with a strong security track record and active development. What it does differently from standard Android: the kernel is hardened against memory exploitation, applications are sandboxed more aggressively, and network permissions can be set per application – you can prevent any given app from accessing the internet entirely, regardless of what its manifest requests. The camera and microphone can be toggled off at the hardware level.

The feature most relevant to practical use is the sandboxed Google Play environment. GrapheneOS lets you install Google Play Services inside an isolated container where it has no special system-level permissions. Apps that require GMS – including most banking apps – run inside this sandbox and pass Play Integrity checks. Google Play Services inside the sandbox cannot read your contacts, location, or other data it would normally access with full system integration. This is the most important distinction between GrapheneOS and every other de-Googled Android build: it solves the banking app problem without surrendering the privacy model.

GrapheneOS supports Pixel devices only (currently Pixel 6 through Pixel 9). The Pixel 8 is the current recommended choice: supported until at least 2028 and priced around EUR 550 to 650 new, less second-hand.

Setup complexity: moderate. You download the web installer from grapheneos.org, enable OEM unlocking in developer settings, connect the phone via USB, and follow the on-screen steps. The process takes 20 to 40 minutes. You do not need command-line tools. If you have followed technical instructions before, you will complete it on the first attempt.

Realistic user: someone who wants maximum privacy and security, is comfortable with a one-time technical setup, and is willing to spend an afternoon configuring their banking apps inside the sandboxed Play environment. The day-to-day experience after setup is essentially identical to standard Android.

Path 2: Fairphone 6 with /e/OS from Murena

/e/OS is a privacy-focused Android distribution built by the non-profit e Foundation. Murena sells Fairphone 6 units with /e/OS pre-installed at EUR 599 – the phone arrives de-Googled, with no setup required on your part.

/e/OS replaces core Google apps with open-source alternatives: the default browser is Cromite (a hardened Chromium fork), maps use OpenStreetMap via Magic Earth, the app store is the Murena App Lounge (aggregating F-Droid and Aurora Store in one interface). App compatibility is handled via microG, which implements enough GMS APIs that most apps using basic GMS features – push notifications, maps integrations – work without modification.

The key advantage over GrapheneOS is the absence of setup: you buy the Fairphone 6 from Murena, configure it like any Android phone, and it is already de-Googled. The key limitation: /e/OS is considerably less hardened than GrapheneOS. There are no per-app network permission controls, no hardware-level microphone or camera toggles, and no sandboxed Google Play environment. Apps that require Play Integrity will not pass the check. If your banking app is one of them, the Murena Fairphone 6 does not solve that problem.

Realistic user: someone who wants less Google in their life but does not want to spend an afternoon configuring their phone; who does not use banking apps that require Play Integrity; and who is interested in the Fairphone hardware for its repairability and longevity arguments alongside the privacy benefit.

Which path fits which user

If you use banking apps and they are non-negotiable: Pixel 8 with GrapheneOS. The sandboxed Play environment is the only credible solution to the Play Integrity problem on a de-Googled device. /e/OS cannot do this.

If you want the simplest possible setup and can bank via a browser, or are willing to switch to a bank whose app does not require Play Integrity: Murena Fairphone 6 with /e/OS. It arrives ready to use.

If your threat model is serious – you are a journalist, a human rights worker, or someone with adversaries who have institutional resources – GrapheneOS is the only correct answer. It has been independently reviewed, is actively maintained by people who understand kernel security, and its sandboxed Google Play resolves the only real practical objection to full de-Googling.

The broader argument

Data collected cannot be uncollected. A behavioural profile that exists does not disappear when you switch phones. But it stops growing the moment you remove the collection mechanism. The decision is asymmetric. The cost of acting is a few hours of setup time and some app friction in the first weeks. The cost of not acting is a continued data-collection arrangement with no end date and no exit.
