The term “dumbphone” is a misnomer. The phones in this guide are not dumb. The MP02 is for buyers who want the minimum viable phone: voice and text, nothing else. If you want to receive a phone call and send a message, and nothing on the device should ever compete with the task in front of you, this is the correct choice.
Mudita Kompakt occupies a different position. It uses an E Ink display rather than a standard LCD or AMOLED screen. E Ink does not glow. It is not refreshing constantly. It does not show colour (in its current implementation) in the vivid, attention-magnetising way that backlit screens do. The battery life is 6 days rather than 1 to 2 days, because E Ink draws almost no power when static.
The Kompakt is slightly more capable than the Punkt: it has offline maps for navigation, a calendar with synchronisation, a basic contacts and messaging interface, and a camera. The camera is not the feature set; it is a convenience. The E Ink screen is the feature. Light Phone 3 is the most capable device in the comparison and the most expensive. It is a 5G phone with a 3.92-inch AMOLED display, 12-megapixel camera, GPS, NFC, and a curated software ecosystem that includes music playback, podcast streaming, a basic navigation tool, and notes – but no social media, no web browser accessible to the user by default, and no app store in the conventional sense. The Light Phone’s operating philosophy is that some smartphone functions are worth keeping and some are not: they have decided which are which, and built accordingly.
The hardware is genuinely good: aluminium and recycled plastic construction, USB-C, fingerprint ID, IP54 water resistance. The chipset is a Qualcomm mid-range processor. This is not a compromise device with budget internals – it is a considered product.
Price is USD 699 (approximately EUR 680 to EUR 720 for EU buyers, depending on import duty and shipping). Deliveries are expected from September 2026 for pre-orders placed now. The device is US-based but ships internationally; EU buyers should factor customs handling.
The Light Phone 3 is for buyers who are reducing smartphone use rather than eliminating it – who want to take a photo, play music from their own library, and get directions, but without the apparatus that makes a standard smartphone difficult to put down.
