The quality headphone you can buy for EUR 150 today should cost EUR 200 to EUR 250 by 2028. That is not a projection based on inflation. It is a consequence of raw material costs that are already in the supply chain, moving toward retail at the usual lag.

Neodymium prices rose approximately 89 per cent year-over-year through 2025 into 2026, driven by China’s Wave 1 rare earth export licensing controls introduced in April 2025. Wave 2 controls, covering five additional rare earth elements, were suspended following diplomatic negotiations in May 2026. They resume on 10 November 2026. Retail headphone prices have not yet fully absorbed the Wave 1 increase. The Wave 2 resumption begins a second round today.

What this guide covers

This guide compares three dynamic-driver headphones available in the EU, all with spare parts programmes and confirmed EU availability. They are not ranked against each other. Each suits a different use case, and the argument for buying any of them applies equally: these are finished manufactured goods, priced before the input cost increases that are now in motion have fully reached the shelf.

The neodymium driver

Quality headphones in the EUR 50 to EUR 500 range use dynamic drivers: a thin diaphragm attached to a voice coil, moving in a magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet. Neodymium replaced ferrite and alnico magnets in driver assemblies during the 1990s because it produces a stronger magnetic field in a smaller, lighter package. A neodymium driver moves the diaphragm with more precision and force per gram of magnet than its predecessors. This is why it now dominates virtually every quality dynamic driver made.

The alternative at higher price points is planar magnetic technology. Planar drivers use a thin membrane with printed conductors held between magnetic arrays. Some planar designs include neodymium, but in smaller quantities and different configurations than dynamic designs. Planars are not unaffected by rare earth costs, but their price point starts where the upper end of this guide’s range ends. They are not a substitute at EUR 150 to EUR 220.

A third category, electrostatic drivers, requires a dedicated energiser amplifier and begins at several hundred euros even at the entry level. It is out of scope here.

The practical point: every dynamic-driver headphone in this guide contains neodymium. That neodymium was priced before Wave 1 controls fully transmitted to retail. The shelf prices you see today are lagging indicators, not current ones.

Repairability

Headphones fail in predictable ways. Cables fail first, then ear pads degrade, then headbands crack. Driver failure is less common but does occur after years of use. In most consumer headphones, any of these failures is effectively a disposal event.

A repairable headphone operates differently. If ear pads cost EUR 20 to replace and a cable costs EUR 15, you have extended a EUR 150 product for a fraction of the replacement cost. As rare earth costs push future headphone prices higher, the cost of replacing a current set with an equivalent rises with them. A serviceable headphone is an asset you can maintain. Both Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser have sold spare parts directly to end users for decades. Both design their DT and HD series for owner servicing. Audio-Technica offers replacement pads for the M50x line through EU retail channels.

What all three get right

All three headphones use full-size neodymium dynamic drivers, produce sound quality that exceeds their price points, and are available through confirmed EU retailers with EU warranty coverage. All three include detachable or replaceable cables. All three have been on the market long enough to have established repair and spare parts supply lines.

None of them is a disposable product.

Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro

The DT 990 Pro has been in continuous production since 1985. beyerdynamic manufactures it in Heilbronn, Germany. Spare parts including ear pads (EUR 21), headbands, cables, and driver assemblies are available directly from beyerdynamic’s EU storefront.

Open-back and 250 ohm, the DT 990 Pro is a studio monitoring design. It does not isolate from ambient noise, and sound passes through the cups in both directions. It requires a headphone amplifier or audio interface to perform properly. A smartphone headphone output will run it, but a EUR 50 to EUR 80 desktop amplifier makes a material difference. The 80-ohm variant drives more easily from consumer sources, at a small cost in ultimate resolution.

The DT 990 Pro is the most analytically honest of the three. For home listening at a desk, in a quiet room, where you want to hear precisely what is on a recording, it is the obvious choice.

Sennheiser HD 560S

The HD 560S is also open-back, 120 ohm, with a detachable cable. It drives adequately from most laptop headphone outputs, though it benefits from amplification. Replacement ear cushions and cables are available through Sennheiser’s EU parts store. Sennheiser’s European operations are based in Wedemark, Germany.

Where the Beyerdynamic leans toward analytical brightness, the HD 560S is tuned for natural, neutral response. In practice this means it is easier to listen to for several hours at a time without the listening itself requiring concentration. The HD 560S is the right choice for long sessions where the music is the point, not the monitoring.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT2

The ATH-M50xBT2 is the portable option in this comparison. Closed-back, it provides passive isolation from ambient noise and does not leak sound outward. It includes Bluetooth 5.0 alongside wired operation, a 3.5mm cable is in the box, and battery life is rated at 50 hours wireless.

The M50x line uses neodymium drivers. Replacement ear pads are available through Audio-Technica EU retail channels and third parties. The ATH-M50xBT2 is available through major EU retailers including Amazon.de and Fnac, typically in the EUR 150 to EUR 160 range.

Closed-back and wireless involve trade-offs in pure audio terms: the soundstage is narrower than either open-back option, and Bluetooth introduces some compression relative to wired. For commuting, travel, or use in a shared space, neither point matters. The Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser are not portable headphones; the ATH-M50xBT2 is. They do not compete for the same use case.

Why the right time to buy is now

Neodymium is not running out. The constraint is processing capacity and export policy, not geology. But building alternative rare earth processing infrastructure takes years, and China’s export licensing system has demonstrated that it can be reactivated with thirty days’ notice. Wave 1 pushed neodymium prices up 89 per cent. Wave 2 adds a second inflection to a market that has not finished adjusting to the first.

Consumer headphone prices reflect a cost structure that is already changing. The EUR 149 Beyerdynamic, the EUR 220 Sennheiser, and the EUR 155 Audio-Technica were all priced before that change fully arrived at retail. They will not be priced this way indefinitely.

A quality dynamic-driver headphone is a finished manufactured good with a rare earth input under sustained price pressure, a long useful life, and, in all three cases covered here, a maintenance pathway that extends that life further. The argument for buying now is the same as the argument for buying repairable tools, durable cookware, or any other physical asset whose input costs are already moving.
