The copper market entered its first structural deficit since 2009 in 2026. S&P Global’s study projects global demand reaching 42 million tonnes annually by 2040 while production capacity peaks at 33 million tonnes in 2030, a shortfall of at least 10 million tonnes. Six supply constraints are identified: declining ore grades, rising energy and labour costs, complex extraction conditions, permitting delays averaging 17 years from discovery to production, supply chain concentration in six countries, and China’s control of 40 per cent of global smelting capacity. The deficit is accelerating, driven by AI infrastructure buildout and defence spending compounding on top of the pre-existing electrification demand.
Why it matters: The structural copper shortage is not a forecast subject to revision – it is the product of mine development timelines that are already locked in. - Iridium completes NTN Direct 5G satellite trials – standard 5G smartphones can reach a LEO constellation.
Iridium Communications completed on-air trials of its NTN Direct service in January 2026, demonstrating two-way messaging via standard 5G waveform algorithms delivered to its low-Earth orbit constellation. The service uses 3GPP NB-IoT standards with Deutsche Telekom committed to roaming access. Commercial service is targeting 2026 following beta testing. Unlike Starlink’s direct-to-cell offering, Iridium’s NTN approach uses standardised protocols, meaning device support is not dependent on a single manufacturer’s implementation.
Why it matters: True communications sovereignty requires redundancy that is not proprietary to one provider. Starlink is a better-known offering; Iridium’s standardised approach means devices that support NB-IoT, which includes a wide range of existing 5G handsets, can connect to satellite coverage without a proprietary SIM or hardware. - Federal Fair Repair Act reintroduced in US Senate and House – parts pairing prohibition expanded.
Senator Ben Ray Lujan and Congressman Joe Morelle reintroduced comprehensive right-to-repair legislation in February 2026, requiring manufacturers to supply diagnostic information, parts, and tools to consumers and independent repairers on fair and reasonable terms. The 2026 draft expands the software restriction prohibition to include security credentials and activation mechanisms, explicitly closing the parts-pairing loophole. U.S. PIRG projects the legislation could reduce household electronics spending by approximately USD 330 per year per household if enacted.
Why it matters: The EU Right to Repair Directive (entering force 31 July 2026) covers EU buyers. The Federal Fair Repair Act addresses the same constraint for US buyers, and its parts-pairing prohibition covers the same mechanism. Both pieces of legislation reinforce the asset durability argument for repairable hardware: devices cannot be legally locked against third-party repair in either jurisdiction once both laws are in force. This is structural change, not a policy risk – the EU law is already locked, and the US bill has bipartisan sponsorship in both chambers.

- Australia grid-forming battery storage reaches 74% of NEM pipeline – 4.4GW added in Q1 2026.
The Australian Energy Market Operator reports grid-forming inverter technology now equips 74 per cent of the 33.2GW battery storage pipeline, with 4,445MW of new large-scale systems commissioned in Q1 2026, more than doubling total installed battery storage in the National Electricity Market in a single quarter. Average battery discharge reached 359MW during the quarter, three times the 98MW recorded in Q1 2025. Wholesale electricity prices fell 12 per cent year-on-year. Grid-forming systems can maintain voltage and frequency independently of thermal generation, providing essential grid services previously requiring spinning turbines.
Why it matters: Australia’s NEM is running the world’s most advanced real-world test of grid-scale battery storage as a primary grid resource, and the Q1 2026 data confirms the transition is proceeding faster than most modelling predicted. The residential battery attachment rate in California is 69 per cent of new solar installs (reported in the home battery guide). The AEMO data is the grid-scale confirmation of the same trend: storage is no longer a supplement to generation, it is a primary grid resource. That changes the economics of home battery investments.

- Hardwood lumber prices up 5.11% in Q2 2026 – 30% annual increase projected by year-end.
Miller Wood Trade Publications reports hardwood lumber costs rose 5.11 per cent in the second quarter of 2026 following two quarters of decline, with year-on-year prices up 4.21 per cent. Production has dropped approximately 20 per cent since 2023 as domestic US mills have not expanded sufficiently to offset tariff-driven reductions in Canadian imports and wildfire supply disruptions. Industry analysts project hardwood prices may rise 30 per cent by year-end, with White Oak and Soft Maple seeing the largest increases.
Why it matters: Hardwood is a finite material category that sits outside the copper and battery supply chains but follows the same logic: a material whose production constraints are structural rather than cyclical will appreciate as a result. This is directly relevant for the permanence and craftsmanship category covered on this site – hand-forged tools, quality furniture, and craft objects made from finite materials are affected by the same repricing dynamic as copper-intensive hardware.
