- Global utility-scale battery storage costs fell to USD 78/MWh in 2025 – a 27% year-on-year decline.
BloombergNEF reports that battery energy storage system costs for four-hour grid projects reached USD 78 per megawatt-hour in 2025, down 27% from 2024 levels and the lowest figure since BNEF began tracking in 2009. The cost collapse reflects manufacturing overcapacity from the electric vehicle sector, intensified competition among battery makers, and improved system designs. BNEF projects a further 25% cost reduction by 2035.
Why it matters: Grid-scale battery costs at USD 78/MWh translate to residential installed cost curves continuing downward. - Consumer Reports endorses Federal Fair Repair Act – right-to-repair now a top legislative priority for 2026.

SpaceX completed the first-generation Starlink Direct to Cell constellation, with 650-plus satellites now providing satellite-to-phone connectivity across five continents. Commercial deployment launched in the UK via Virgin Media O2 in February 2026, enabling voice, text, and location services on unmodified mobile phones without dedicated hardware. The network represents the largest 4G coverage footprint by area on the planet. In response, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon announced in May 2026 plans to form a joint venture pooling spectrum resources for a competing satellite-to-device offering.

- China’s expanded rare earth licensing regime – covering holmium, erbium, thulium, europium, and ytterbium – takes effect November 2026.
China announced in October 2025 an expansion of its rare earth export licensing system to include five additional elements beyond the seven already restricted in April 2025. The controls were scheduled for November 2025 then suspended for one year; they are now set to take effect 10 November 2026. The new restrictions target exports to sectors supporting foreign defence and advanced technology industries. China currently processes 92% of global rare earth magnets. Holmium and erbium are critical inputs for semiconductor lithography, AI systems, electric vehicle motors, and aerospace. Holmium is particularly significant as manufacturers had been substituting it for previously restricted elements.
Why it matters: The November 2026 date is the next supply-concentration countdown event on the finite materials thesis.
