Finland has roughly 500,000 summer cottages and weekend cabins (mokki). A significant proportion of them have no grid connection and never have had one. Off-grid cabin life is not a niche experiment in the Finnish context – it is the default condition for a large part of the country’s recreational housing stock.
What has changed in the last five years is the quality and price of the equipment available for that condition. A portable power station with 1 to 2 kWh of LFP storage and a 200W solar panel can now be purchased for EUR 1,200 to EUR 2,000 total. That equipment will run cabin lighting, phone charging, a laptop, a small refrigerator, and a water pump for a weekend without grid access and without a petrol generator.
This is the practical setup. Here is how to think about sizing it.
Start with load assessment, not equipment
The most common mistake in off-grid cabin setups is buying equipment before calculating load. The two most power-hungry appliances in a typical cabin are the refrigerator and the water pump. Everything else is manageable.
A small 12V compressor refrigerator suitable for cabin use (60 to 80 litres, marketed for caravan and boat use) draws 30 to 50Wh per hour in Finnish summer temperatures. Over 24 hours that is 300 to 500Wh – well within the capacity of a 1 kWh power station with daily solar recharging. A standard residential fridge draws two to three times more and is not the right choice for an off-grid setup.
A submersible well pump, if the cabin has a drilled well, draws 300 to 800W while running but runs for only a few minutes per fill cycle. Total daily energy use for water pumping is typically 50 to 200Wh depending on how much water is used. This is manageable with the right power station – look for one that supports the pump’s wattage (check the surge watt rating, not just the continuous watt rating, as well pumps have a high start-up surge).
Lighting, phone charging, a laptop, and a router or mobile hotspot add another 50 to 150Wh per day collectively. Total daily load for a well-run cabin weekend setup is typically 500 to 900Wh.
The solar and battery pairing
With a 500 to 900Wh daily load, a 200W portable solar panel in Finnish summer conditions (June to August, latitude 60 to 66 degrees north) produces 600 to 1,000Wh per day on average, accounting for cloud cover and panel angle. A 1 to 1.5 kWh power station acts as a buffer: it stores excess midday solar production and covers evening loads.
A practical starting point: a portable power station with 1 to 1.5 kWh LFP capacity paired with a 160W to 200W portable solar panel. From the options currently available in the EU, this means something in the range of an EcoFlow DELTA 2 (1,024Wh, EUR 699) or Bluetti AC200MAX (2,048Wh, EUR 1,099) paired with an EcoFlow 160W panel (EUR 249) or Renogy 200W panel (EUR 221).
For a cabin that will be used in autumn or spring, when Finnish sunlight is significantly reduced, increase either the panel wattage (to 220W or 400W) or the battery capacity (to 2 kWh or more) to maintain the same load coverage. Winter cabin use with solar alone is not viable in Finland above Zone 5 – the combination of low sun angle and short days produces too little input. A generator or grid connection backup is necessary for winter use.
Heating and water
The power setup described above does not include electric heating. Nor should it. A wood stove (puuliesi or pönttöuuni) is the correct heating solution for a Finnish cabin: efficient, independent of any external supply chain beyond the woodpile, and capable of heating a small cabin space in an hour. Electric space heaters draw 1,000 to 2,000W continuously – far beyond what a portable power station is designed to sustain for heating purposes.
Water at cabins without a drilled well typically comes from a lake or stream via a surface pump, or is carried in. For surface pumping, a 12V solar pump drawing 60 to 120W works directly from a power station or from a small dedicated solar panel. For drilled wells, verify the pump’s startup surge with the power station manufacturer before buying – some 230V well pumps have startup surges that exceed what portable power stations can handle.
Connectivity
Mobile data covers most of Finland adequately for basic use. A 4G or 5G mobile router with a Finnish SIM is the lowest-friction solution for cabin internet. In more remote areas or for higher bandwidth, Starlink Standard or Roam provides satellite connectivity without requiring a ground-based cell signal. The order of purchase
If you are building this setup from scratch, the order matters. Buy the power station first. It provides immediate value as a backup power source, a camping power source, and a UPS for sensitive equipment, before you add solar. Then add the panel. Together they form a closed loop.
